Smyrna Post 14 Back in the Win Column

By Wayne Hurd 06/28/2017, 12:15am EDT

Rain and Storms can't stop Smyrna

Smyrna Post 14 defeated Milford Post 3 on Tuesday evening at Woodbridge HS by a score of 6-1.  On a beautiful day, the rain began to fall immediately following the pregame plate meeting.  In the top of the first, Smyrna left the bases loaded as Post 3 starting pitcher, Jake Brewington, was able to get back to back strikeouts to end the threat.  Smyrna starting pitcher Unterreiner yielded a leadoff single in the bottom of the first to Will Geppert but that was the only hit Milford would get all night.

A lightning delay in the 2nd inning put the game on hold for 30 minutes and play resumed with Milford having runners on first and second with 1 out.  Jeremy Carrow took the ball for Post 14 and retired 11 straight batters, striking out 6 of those, before yielding a leadoff walk in the bottom of the 6th.

Smyrna scored 2 unearned runs in the 3rd inning with 3 hits sandwiched around 2 Milford errors.  They tacked on another run in the 5th after a leadoff triple by Brandt Penuel and an RBI groundout by Ryan Seymour.  Bryan Bullock came on in relief for Milford with 2 outs in the 5th and pitched into the 7th before being relieved by Dorin Emerick after a leadoff double by Davis and a single by Penuel.

Carrow was lifted in the 7th after a leadoff walk and Jared Gillis came on in relief.  A couple Smyrna errors resulted in an unearned run for Milford.  Gillis eventually struck out the side to end the game.

Jeremy Carrow got the win for Post 14 going 4.2 innings striking out 7 while Jake Brewington took the loss striking out 5 in 4.2 innings.

Smyrna's top 4 hitters scored all 6 runs with Penuel leading the way going 3 for 4 with a triple and 3 runs scored.  Davis was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and Jarel Gillis smashed the first pitch offering of Emerick off the right center field fence for a 2 rbi double in the 7th to put the game out of reach.  Zlock also doubled for Smyrna.

Smyrna improves to 4-4 on the season while Milford falls to 1-6.  Milford Post 3 returns to action on 6/28 vs. Post 25 Middletown while Smyrna meets Nanticoke Post 6  on Thursday.
