State Tournament Expanded to the Top 8 Seeds

By rsl 06/30/2018, 10:00pm EDT

The League Expands the field

The Department of Delaware American Legion Baseball Committee has decided to expand the field of the 2018 State tournament to the top 8 teams based on league play.

"We looked at the schedule, and regardless if we play a six or eight team tournament, it would still take 5 days." according to State Chairman Roy Lamberton. "In addition, the top 2 seeds would not play a game until Monday of the tournament. "

"We decided under the new 7 Inning game format, we could play the entire tournament on one field, and all 8 teams would be in action during the first 2 days of the event. The idea is to send our best team to the Mid Atlantic Regional, and that requires a team to play at least 5 games."

The 2018 State Championship Tournament will start July 21st at Wilson Field in New Castle, Delaware. The host team is Stahl Post 30. (article edited July 2nd)

Canal's Insurance Run in the 7th Proves to be the difference

Canal Post 25 defeated CKRT Post 7 in DE American Legion baseball Wednesday night in a hard fought, back and forth contest by the score of 5-4.  Ryan Bond tossed 6 innings and yielded 3 runs on 4 hits in earning the win. Connor Megginson toed the rubber for Post 7 also going 6 innings and yielding 4 runs on 6 hits while striking out 7 in defeat.

Offensively Canal was led by Jake Walls who collected 3 hits, 3 stolen bases and scored 2 runs.  Jarrett Wallace had 2 hits including a double.  Post 7 was led by Blaine Hansen at the plate with 2 hits and an RBI, Megginson with a double and 3 RBI and Ethan Hurd with a double.

Canal started the scoring in the 3rd inning when Jake Walls collected a flair single up the middle and promptly stole second.  A line drive off the bat of Joey Lungen past the reach of shortstop Jimmy Kucharzyk plated Wells.  The score remained 1-0 into the bottom of the 5th when Post 7 scratched 3 runs across on 2 walks, a sacrifice, a single by Hansen and a Megginson double.

The lead was short lived though as Canal loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the 6th with an error and back to back singles.  Ryan Bond stepped up and smacked a 2 rbi double to tie the score at 3.  With 1 out in the inning, Garrett Alexander added a sacrifice fly to give Canal a 4-3 lead.

In the top of the 7th, Kobe Heinicke came on in relief of Megginson for Post 7.  Canal added an insurance run that would prove to be valuable on an RBI single by Colton Duckworth.  Jake Walls came on in relief for Post 25 in the bottom of the 7th inning.  After a strikeout to open the inning, Kobe Heinicke lined a single to right field to get things started for Post 7, followed by a walk and a single by Hansen to load the bases.  An RBI fielders choice closed the score to 5-4.  With runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 out, Walls was able to get a ground ball for the final out earning the save.

With the win Canal improves to 8-4 while Post 7 falls to 1-7.  Canal travels to Smyrna on Thursday 6/28 while Post 7 hosts Post 6 on Thursday 6/28.

CKRT Post 7 Takes Advantage of a few Bye Weekends

By Wayne Hurd 06/24/2018, 8:30am EDT

Takes on a few Maryland teams in a Mason-Dixon Line Series

With an early start to the season, a rescheduling arrangement with Delaware Post 1, and a bye week all rolled into the first 4 weekends of June, Post 7 added to its schedule with 3 weekend series against teams from Maryland including 2 games against Ocean City, 2 versus Talbot County, and 1 game versus Salisbury Post 64.

On Saturday, June 2nd, Post 7 made its debut against Ocean City at Wicomico HS capturing a 13-8 come from behind victory.  A torrential rainstorm at the completion of the game canceled the first meeting of the year versus Salisbury Post 64.

On Saturday, June 16th, Talbot County visited the friendly confines of Milford HS.  Post 7 swept the double header with Talbot by taking the first game 8-3 and then posting a huge comeback victory in game 2 by the score of 17-15.  Post 7 rallied from 9 runs down in the second inning scoring 14 unanswered runs.

After a challenging week of league play this week versus Post 6 and Fox Post, Post 7 returned to Salisbury on Saturday, June 23rd to take on Ocean City and Salisbury Post 94 in a split double header.  Post 7 captured an 11-8 victory over Ocean City in 8 innings after OC tied the score in the bottom of the 7th.

Game 2 of the afternoon was a well played pitchers duel with Post 7 falling to Post 94 by the score of 2-0.   Post 7 improved to 5-5 overall on the season and is 1-4 in league play.
